Melissa Rives, ACE Austin ISD

This month's Staff Spotlight is Melissa Rives! Melissa is a Site Coordinator and Program Specialist with ACE Austin ISD, where she helps students grow, build confidence, and reach their full potential.

Melissa's passion for youth development is deeply personal. As an elementary school student, she received support that made a meaningful difference in her academic and personal growth. That experience stayed with her, and as an adult, it inspired her to give back in the same way. She's drawn to working with students in school settings because she sees so many bright, capable young people who just need the right support to thrive.

One of Melissa's most impactful moments came during her first year working with students, when she truly began to understand their individual experiences and how she could positively support them.

She witnessed the incredible dedication and teamwork it takes to create a meaningful environment. Teachers and volunteers worked closely together to ensure students felt supported and encouraged to grow. What stood out most was when parents expressed their gratitude, sharing how relieved they were to know their kids had a safe place to learn, grow, and feel cared for. "Knowing that my work contributed to that sense of safety and growth was deeply rewarding," she said, "and affirmed my passion for youth development."

Melissa's message to fellow OST professionals is to lead with empathy, patience, and consistency. In her words, "Taking the time to truly listen to students and understand their experiences can make a lasting difference." She reminds us that creating safe, supportive spaces where young people feel seen, valued, and encouraged helps them thrive. Even small acts of care and encouragement can have a powerful impact, and when adults work together with a shared commitment to students' growth, the results can be truly meaningful.
