Keysha McMarion, Austin Parks and Recreation

This month's Staff Spotlight is Keysha McMarion! Keysha is a Program Instructor with Austin Parks and Recreation, where she creates spaces where youth feel supported, build confidence, and realize their potential. Keysha was inspired to pursue youth development because she's seen how powerful it is when young people have a positive, consistent influence in their lives.

One moment that stands out happened while working with a participant who didn't eat vegetables. Keysha enjoys getting kids involved in the kitchen, so she encouraged him to help make veggie and cheese fritters.

At first, he was hesitant, but once he helped prepare the food, his curiosity kicked in and he decided to try one. He not only liked it, but took the rest home to share with his family. His mom later shared how happy she was that he was now eating vegetables without being forced. "That moment showed me that sometimes it's not about pushing kids, it's about giving them the right experience," Keysha shared. "When they feel included and empowered, they surprise you."

Looking ahead, Keysha's dream is to open her own culinary school for kids. Her advice to fellow OST professionals is to be consistent, patient, and intentional. In her words, "You don't have to be perfect, you just have to show up and genuinely care." She reminds us to meet youth where they are and create spaces where they feel safe, included, and capable. Sometimes the smallest moments can have the biggest impact.
