4ATX Foundation X Andy Roddick Foundation
A partnership of impact.
To capture the real impact of our Network partners during Summer Learning Week, I had the privilege of visiting some of our Network partners to witness firsthand the magic of summer learning happening in our community. From transformative youth partnerships to innovative programming, these stories showcase why summer learning makes all the difference. My first visit was to 4ATX Foundation’s Verde Leaders “P.E. Takeover” at the Andy Roddick Foundation Summer Camps.
The thud of soccer balls hitting the net echoes across the field as youth from the Andy Roddick Foundation Summer Camp line up for shooting practice, their Verde Leaders coaches from 4ATX Foundation calling out encouragement with each kick.
4ATX Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Austin FC, brings more than soccer skills to their partnership with the Andy Roddick Foundation. Their Verde Leaders program weaves together soccer training with social-emotional learning, creating a unique space where physical fitness meets personal growth for underserved youth. In a community where quality afterschool sports programs often come with price tags, many youth miss out on both the physical benefits of athletics and the confidence that comes from mastering new skills. Programs that combine sports with social-emotional growth are even rarer.
The "P.E. Takeover" program reveals the true magic of this partnership. 4ATX coaches aren't just running soccer drills - they're creating an atmosphere where leadership skills flourish naturally. After each practice session, the coaches transition seamlessly into Restorative Circles, gathering groups of six campers around different leadership themes. During my visit, the theme was encouragement.
The circle begins quietly, with each camper sharing what they're grateful for that day. Then the conversation deepens as coaches guide discussions about how to support a friend who's struggling. The session culminates with powerful affirmations - voices rising together as youth declare themselves "strong, confident, and Verde Leaders."
What strikes me most is how the coaches position themselves as facilitators rather than stars. They cheer from the sidelines, celebrate different personalities, and create space for every voice to be heard. Coach Gaby exemplifies this approach, transforming her circle into a sanctuary of sharing, patience, and support. "My favorite part of the program is seeing how the kids grow and getting to know them - watching their confidence on the field transform into confidence off the field," she explains
This approach creates real transformation. Gaby points to one 6th grader who arrived shy and nervous about playing soccer. Through scrimmages, goal-scoring celebrations, and encouragement to try different positions, he evolved into a peer leader who now offers others the same support he once needed. The cycle of growth continues as confident youth lift up newcomers.
As the summer continues, this partnership will touch dozens more youth, creating ripple effects that extend into families and the broader community. It's a powerful reminder that quality out-of-school time programming isn't just about filling hours - it's about filling young people with the confidence, skills, and connections they need to thrive.
