4-H CAPITAL is a Travis County AgriLife Extension program that empowers youth through hands-on science learning, afterschool enrichment, and community involvement. Serving students across Travis County, the program partners with local schools to provide engaging, project-based experiences that connect science to real-world applications.

Through school-based science clubs, youth explore topics such as agriculture, natural resources, and environmental science in interactive and collaborative ways. These experiences are designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and support long-term academic and personal growth.

AmeriCorps instructors play a key role in delivering programming, bringing diverse perspectives and energy into the classroom while supporting students in their learning. Together with staff and community partners, they help create meaningful opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and stay engaged in their education.

By combining science, service, and real-world learning, 4-H CAPITAL prepares youth to become active, informed members of their communities.

Position Summary: 4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps Instructors plan and lead hands-on science activities for elementary and middle school students throughout Austin, TX. Instructors teach out-of-school time classes, in-school enrichment activities, and assist school staff with groups of students at local schools. Instructors also participate in community outreach activities, attend trainings, and may provide disaster relief work. Instructors receive training and support in a variety of areas to meet the essential functions of their position.
Service hours are Mon-Fri 9:00am - 6:00pm, with occasional opportunities to serve on evenings and/or weekends. Instructors typically work out of the 4-H CAPITAL office in central Austin from 9:00am until 2:30pm at which point they head out to school sites (mileage is reimbursed between work sites). Fridays are used for planning, team meetings, service and program reporting, and trainings.

Responsibilities

• Inspire youth to develop into inquiring scientists, citizens of character, partners in service and engaged community members
• Be a positive role model and influence for elementary and middle school aged students
• Plan, lead, and assist 4-H CAPITAL’s science curriculum in the after-school space
• Develop proficiency in teaching and leading groups of youth of up to 16 students
• Implement proactive behavior management systems to ensure a safe and impactful teaching environment
• Instructors will work Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM (40-42 hours per week) with occasional weekend events
• Keep attendance records of 4-H CAPITAL classes
• Assist in gathering and reporting data for evaluation purposes
• Willingness to work in an office environment that houses animals
• Wear AmeriCorps logo while serving hours

Qualifications and Skills:

• Interest in science, community service, youth development and/or non-profit work
• Experience working with youth in a professional setting
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn new things
• Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence
• Has reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites.
• Ability to bend, sit on floor, stoop and lift teaching materials that may weigh up to 50 lbs.
• Bilingual with English and Spanish

Compensation and Benefits:

•Earn a monthly living stipend of $3,238.10 (FT)
• $7,395.00 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of term of service.
